What Is Climate Change? Climate Change 101
Welcome, folks, to ‘The Climate Crew’—your one-stop destination for everything you need to know about climate change, sustainability, and keeping our planet cool and green! Today, we’re diving into the HOT TOPIC (pun intended): What is climate change, and should we be sweating about it?
But before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s clear the air on What climate really means: Climate is sometimes mistaken for weather. Think of climate as a long term vibe of the planet – it’s what you expect, like heavy rainfall hitting Mumbai in the month of July is what is expected every year whereas weather is mother earth’s daily mood swings like it’s 40°C and sunny in Delhi today. Climate is what you have signed up for and weather is what you actually get. Weather is a short term condition of the atmosphere while climate is a pattern of weather that is typically averaged over 30 years. Climate lays down the script for predictability, but climate change? It’s like some plot twists, making weather patterns less predictable.
Figure 1: ‘Weather’ is short-term changes, and ‘climate’ is weather conditions averaged over at least 30 years (image source: ESA).
Now, you might wonder, is climate change the new kid on the block? No! Natural climate shifts have been around since the days of dinosaurs. Earth’s been through some climate ups and downs naturally, thanks to things like the way it tilts, the sun’s moods, the oceans’ vibes, and even volcanoes blowing off steam. It is said that In the last 650,000 years, there have been around seven ice ages, the most recent ending around 12,000 years ago and the earth is still in the natural warming process. But here’s the twist: while Earth’s been sipping its natural climate cocktail, we humans decided to crank up the party with a glass of fossil fuel garnished with some coal!
Now, if you’re thinking, “Hey if it’s all-natural, why the fuss?” The chilling fact here is: CO2 levels, which used to float around 175 parts per million to 300 parts per million and have never crossed the 300 ppm mark for the past 4,00,000 years, have climbed to 400 ppm in just 75 years! That means what the T-rex, mammoths, and our ancestors combined couldn’t achieve in the last 4,00,000 years, we achieved it in JUST 75 years! All thanks to our love for fossil fuels and tree-chopping antics. No wonder our love for fossil fuel will turn us into fossils one day, that is why maybe they say “Mitti se aaye the Mitti me mil jayenge” (“From dust you came, to dust you shall return”). Carbon dioxide! That sneaky greenhouse gas acts as a blanket trapping the heat inside the atmosphere and cranking up the earth’s temperature. It’s like realizing you left the gas on!
So, why should we care? Well, stay tuned for our next video, where we’ll dive into the causes of climate change, its impact on life and the ecosystem, and the infamous 1.5°C limit. Drop your thoughts in the comments below. And if you liked this blog, share it with your friends and family.
Thanks for tuning in. Until next time, keep it chill, keep it green, and remember, nature’s counting on us.
